parent/child activities
Below is a list of activities that you and your child can do at home. These activities will give a student practice with both reading and math skills. Include family members or friends in these activities!
1. Scavenger Hunt: Create a scavenger hunt around your house. Have your child use non-standard units (everyday objects such as paperclips, pencils, erasers, etc.) as well as standard units (rulers, scales, etc.) to complete the hunt. Have your child read each clue, measure the object, and record the answers. This is a fun activity that you can do as a whole family. Break into teams and race to the finish!
2. Guess the Weight: Have each family member sit in a circle. Have one person in charge of selecting objects and blindfolding everyone else. Each person holds a pre-selected object for 5 seconds. They then must guess how much the object weighs and record it on a piece of paper. Use as many objects as you please. When all objects are held by all the players, check everyone's answers and compare them. (Note: This can be done with other measurements as well (length, volume, time, area, perimeter, etc.)
3. Cloze Procedure (Madlibs): Take turns writing a paragraph about our measurement unit. This could include height, weight, distance, length, etc. Then, eliminate every 5-10th word in the passage. Have your partner go through and guess the missing word. When you are finished, count each other's scores and compare answers.

Here is an example of a non-standard unit of measurement, paperclips, that you could use for Activity 1.
Have your child test objects that vary in weight. Examples of objects to include in Activity 2 are pumpkins, utensils, cups, candles, books, etc.
Here is what the Cloze Procedure looks like. After writing a passage for Activity 3, delete every several words to test your child's understanding of the topic.
